Shubman Gill set to miss Asia Cup squad
Shubman Gill is unlikely to be part of India’s Asia Cup squad this year as the selectors, led by Ajit Agarkar, are preparing to back in-form and experienced names. The All India Men’s Senior Selection Committee will meet on August 19 in Mumbai to finalise the squad for the tournament beginning September 9.
Reports suggest the committee is leaning towards retaining the successful T20I core under Gautam Gambhir, which means Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal could be rested. Both players are expected to remain fresh for the upcoming red-ball series against the West Indies starting October 2.
Shreyas Iyer and Jitesh Sharma in contention
According to Sportstar, Shreyas Iyer and Jitesh Sharma are strong contenders to be named in the squad. Jitesh impressed in IPL 2025 with his powerful hitting for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, while Iyer guided Punjab Kings to the IPL final. Neither has played a T20I since Gautam Gambhir took over as head coach, making their possible return a significant development.
The selectors reportedly want an experienced middle-order option for UAE conditions, which works in Iyer’s favour. His past performances in the region, including a key role in India’s Champions Trophy 2025 triumph, further strengthen his case.
Selection dilemmas ahead
If Iyer is included, one of Shivam Dube or Rinku Singh could miss out. Both featured in India’s T20I series against England earlier this year. Meanwhile, Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma are expected to retain their spots after strong performances.
The Asia Cup begins on September 9, with India starting their campaign against UAE on September 10. The tournament runs until September 28, and India are grouped with Pakistan, UAE, and Oman.
