Aakash Chopra backs Bumrah on Test cricket load
Former India opener Aakash Chopra believes Jasprit Bumrah will not play too many Test matches in the future but has urged against forcing him into early retirement. Bumrah faced criticism during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy for skipping two Tests in the five-match series against England.
The 31-year-old pacer was upfront about featuring in only three Tests and finished with 17 wickets. India, however, won the two games where he did not play. This led to debate among fans and experts about his workload and commitment, especially when Mohammed Siraj bowled 186 overs in the series and picked 23 wickets.
Chopra calls Bumrah a rare diamond
Chopra defended Bumrah on his YouTube channel, calling him a “24-carat pure gold” bowler who deserves special treatment. He said India should value his presence instead of worrying about the number of matches he plays. According to Chopra, Bumrah may pick and choose which Tests to play, but whenever he is available, he should be in the playing XI.
“There is no bowler like Bumrah. Don’t push him towards retirement. He is the Kohinoor diamond of Indian cricket. The longer he plays, the better it is,” Chopra said.
Bowlers need rotation, says Chopra
Chopra further explained that rotating bowlers is natural in long Test series and the team management should adapt accordingly. He argued that if Bumrah were a batter, continuity would be necessary, but with fast bowlers, rotation is essential to manage workload.
Meanwhile, a report suggests Bumrah has made himself available for the upcoming Asia Cup, starting September 9. The Indian selectors are expected to announce the squad on August 19 in Mumbai.
